A deviated septum is an issue that afflicts many people throughout the world. The septum is the partition in the center of the nasal cavity formed of bone and cartilage that divides it into two separate airways. Symptoms of a deviated septum include chronic sinus issues, trouble breathing through one side of the nose, and constant snoring that will sometimes occur even when awake.

The procedure to correct this affliction is know by two separate names. The first name is septoplasty. The second name is septorhinoplasty. Though both of these terms mean roughly the same thing sometimes surgeons and lay people will differentiate between the two to state that septoplasty is surgery solely for the septum while septorhinoplasty is surgery for the septum that is part of surgery for the rest of the nose as well.

To specifiy this further. Septoplasty would only be done to correct a deviated septum. Septorhinoplasty is done while the cosmetic surgeon reshapes the rest of the nose as well.

Either way the procedure uses the open method of rhinoplasty. This method involves cutting the columnella and lifting up the external skin of the nose so that the nasal cavity is easier to access for the surgeon. This is different from the closed method in which the outer flesh is untouched and all surgery is performed within the nose via the nostrils.

During septorhinoplasty the septum will be carved and sliced until all the excess cartilage and bone is excised. This will normally leave roughly a centimeter’s width of material in the exact center of the nasal cavity that may require more cartilage or surgical grade plastic to be implanted in an effort to stabilize and support the new nose.
